Regeneration specialist, Waystone Ltd is celebrating success after its 338 acre Glasshoughton site near Castleford was awarded the ‘Best Regeneration Project’ award at the prestigious Yorkshire Property Awards 2008.
Attended by over 800 industry professionals, the Yorkshire Property Awards celebrates excellence within the property industry across the region while simultaneously raising £163,070 for the Variety Club of Great Britain. Nominations are encouraged throughout the industry and a committee of highly regarded individuals make the final decision on winners.
Located at Junction 32 of the M62 in West Yorkshire between Castleford and Pontefract, the £200 million Glasshoughton site won the award based on its massive contribution towards the regeneration of the area.
Stuart McLoughlin, Managing Director at Waystone comments, ‘We are delighted to have won ‘Best Regeneration Project’ at the Yorkshire Property Awards. The Glasshoughton site was once home to a thriving Colliery and Coke works, the whole surrounding community was economically and socially dependant on the site and after it closed in 1986 the 336 acre site stood derelict for almost 10 years. Since a massive reclamation exercise the site is now home to an Xscape Leisure Mountain, a 20 acre housing development, B&Q, Freeport Designer Outlet Village and numerous other leisure retailers, not to mention the variety of businesses that’s have made their home here in the business park areas. We have put in new roads, a new train station and our future plans also include a new stadium for the Castleford Tigers. We have created 3000 jobs so far, and anticipate at least another 1000 will be created on completion.
Stuart continues; ‘Waystone as a developer has a mission. If you are in a poor area you tend to stay poor unless there is a significant change to the environment, and that has to be a development which has sufficient critical mass to make a difference. It isn’t sufficient to build a couple of tower blocks of housing, we’re looking at developments where they are mixed use and can attract people to them out of the immediate area. At Waystone we are great fans of mixed use, especially where there is sufficient space to make a mark as a developer and a difference to the environment, community, and county, that is why I believe we won the Best Regeneration Project Award’.
