Councillor Peter Box, leader of Wakefield District Council and several local councillors, made a special visit to the Glasshoughton development in Castleford to see the significant progress made to date on this landmark site.
Councillor Box met with Stuart McLoughlin, managing director of Waystone, and John Haymes and Dennis McInnes of Yorkshire Forward. Waystone and Yorkshire Forward are responsible for the regeneration and development of the prestigious 335-acre former colliery site.
The visit included a Land Rover tour to see the extensive areas of reclaimed land that will provide for future development, as well as projects already underway such as the factory units being developed by CDP, the new offices for design consultancy Esquisse, and Alkane's new green energy project. They were also taken to see the rail bridge being built by Dew Pitchmastic, which provides access to 30 acres of reclaimed land at the southern end of the site, and a residential development, by Persimmon Homes.
Stuart McLoughlin said "A tremendous amount of work and effort has gone into making Glasshoughton one of the most significant and prestigious developments in the North. We were proud to be able to show Councillor Box how the transformation of Glasshoughton is turning a derelict colliery site into a dynamic area to live and work."
The multi-million pound redevelopment of the former colliery site at Barlborough near Sheffield has taken another step towards completion with the announcement that three companies are to open major new premises there with a combined value in excess of £3.5million.
The 300-acre site is being regenerated and developed by property developers Waystone.
Financial services provider McDonald Associates has moved from nearby Eckington into purpose-built 4,500 sq ft offices on September 24 2001.
Construction has already started on new premises for Lynx Technology Ltd, which is moving to Barlborough in May 2002. Lynx Technology Ltd is relocating its Sheffield-based Managed Services Centre into new offices and computer workshops with a total area of 30,000 sq ft unit. The company, which has seven regional offices and employs 400 people countrywide, provides IT solutions and e-business infrastructures to UK companies.
And work has begun on 4,500 sq ft offices for HJ Banks, a nationwide company that operates in the field of waste management, open cast mining and property.
The company is relocating from its current premises in Chesterfield.
According to Stuart McLoughlin, Waystone's managing director: "Barlborough is one of the most attractive locations for businesses to be found in the region.
"Located between Sheffield and Nottingham and adjacent to Junction 30 of the M1, Barlborough is ideal for manufacturing and commerce and the 90 acres of land designated for business and industrial use are complemented by a wide range of other facilities including a hotel, a pub, fast food outlets, and a golf course and driving range, as well as residential housing.
"Barlborough is already proving a popular location for businesses and we are delighted that these three companies have chosen to do business here."
Vesuvius, an international company manufacturing specialised refractory products for the steel industry worldwide, has moved to the multi-million pound redevelopment of the former colliery site at Barlborough, which is being developed by Waystone.
Vesuvius had its new premises officially opened by Sir Bryan Nicholson, Chairman of Cookson Group plc in September.
The company has moved into a purpose built 22,000 sq ft head office and a 24,000 sq ft research and development facility and the move to Barlborough merges several Vesuvius sites into a single location.
Located between Sheffield and Nottingham and adjacent to Junction 30 of the M1, Barlborough is an ideal location for manufacturing and commerce with 90 acres of land designated for business and industrial use.
Stuart McLoughlin, Waystone's managing director commented: "Barlborough is already proving a popular location for business and we are delighted that such a major company as Vesuvius has chosen to invest in its future and move to this site.
"Vesuvius, for which Waystone won a commendation in the "Projects of the Year Award", sponsored by EMDA, joins such companies as Arnold Magnets, which occupies a 10 acre factory site and we look forward to making further announcements about new businesses soon relocating to Barlborough."
Work is now under way on the construction of a £¾million bridge project, which will link two halves of a prestigious Yorkshire development.
The new 36-metre bridge will span the Leeds to Pontefract railway line that bisects the Glasshoughton development. The 335-acre former colliery development near Castleford is already home to a growing number of businesses, including Alkane Energy, McDonalds and Esquisse Design, as well as the Factory Outlet Village and a major housing development by Persimmon Homes.
Waystone Ltd, the company responsible for the development of Glasshoughton, awarded the contract for the construction of the new bridge to Oldham based Dew Pitchmastic.
The bridge will provide access to Summit Park, the new 30-acre development adjacent to the M62 motorway, on regenerated land in the southern area of the site.
Waystone expects that the bridge, which is being constructed using reinforced earth abutments and steel beams, will be completed before the end of the year. Once the bridge is open, the development of the southern area of Glasshoughton can begin, providing additional development land alongside the M62 at Junction 32.
